Shapes

A few days ago room five made a couple of shapes out of geometry nets in Math. A  geometry net is a flattened out three dimensional shape like a cube, a prism or a pyramid. When you cut out the "net" you fold it and glue it together and then you can see what the three dimensional shape looks like. Here is a couple of pictures of my finished shapes.

 

Haiku

Today we started making haikus in writing. A haiku is a short poem with three lines. The first and third lines have five syllables and the second line has seven. I did a haiku about my cat Jeffrey who is very annoying and meows and scratches at my door at three in the morning and when you open the door she doesn't even want to come in! This is my haiku.

Metaphors!!!

In reading Room Five has been doing some work on metaphors!!. Metaphors are a figure of speech used when words or phrases are applied to an object or action that are mainly different but have a few things in common. An example of a metaphor is this: He is a shining star or His words are pearls of wisdom. Metaphors are like similes but they don't contain the words like or as. I also found out the word 'metaphor' is a metaphor mind BLOWN!!!.

Math

At school we have been doing some math. In math we have been doing FRACTIONS!! for fractions the math group I'm in (the orcas) have done some worksheets. One called basketball math were we had to shoot some hoops and do math and one called chocolate mint cookies where we converted fractions, simplified fractions, do equivalent fractions, decompose fractions and make fractions into proper and improper fractions. But unfortunately we didn't get any cookies. (ಥ﹏ಥ)

Sun Poem

Yesterday and today Room Five wrote a sun poem. The way these poems went is, A comparison for what the sun is like a gold coin, A ing verb like brightly then a describing word like scorching. and it goes on like this for three verses each with two sentences like the one I describe. My one went like this.

The sun is a light bulb brightly burning the sky.
It is an orb of fire masterfully scorching the earth.

The sun is a giant grapefruit shooting scalding juice across the sky.
It is a fire singeing the landscape.

The sun is a golden coin running across the light sky.
It is a spider stalking through the sky.

Water safety slide show

Last year I got invited to help make a funny slideshow called 'water safety'. Ben started making it two or three years ago but'water safety' is almost completely irrelevant to the idea of water safety. Even so here is the slideshow 'water safety'.

Marae Visit

On Wednesday the 28 of august the whole of Good Shepherd school went to the Te Noho Kotahitanga Marae at Unitec. When we got off the busses we had to be welcomed on to the marae with a powhiri before we could actually go on the marae, but once we were welcomed we took off our shoes and entered the wharenui which is the meeting house in Māori. In the wharenui we sat down, finished the powhiri and we sang some Māori songs then we had some food in the wharekai (or eating house), did the haka and left the marae.

Ocean poster

In reading Room Five made posters about the five different oceans. The Arctic Ocean, The Pacific Ocean, The Atlantic Ocean, The Indian Ocean and the Southern Ocean. On the posters there had to be... the deepest point, the oceans name, the area , your name, where its located and five different animals that only live there. An example of this, is my poster.

Speechs

At Good Shepherd School we have been doing our speech competition. The speech competition started last term when we started writing them. We wrote them for homework. Mine is about (drum roll) 'Why The English Language is stupid'. At first it seemed just OK and that it wouldn't go far, but somehow I managed to get it into the finals!!!

Egg sitting

In the second half of term two we did keeping ourselves safe. Keeping Ourselves Safe is basically a course telling you what to do if people are showing you inappropriate images and stuff like that. For a particular lesson we had to keep an egg alive for four days and we had to keep them with us all the time. But it was harder than you think I was going to play some trumpet to my egg (who was called Fredrick.) BUT I tripped on my sisters toy shark (called fin soup) Fredrick was in a egg cup inside a extremely padded sistema container dropped the container and Fredrick DIED. luckily Fredrick wasn't a baby.

Maori art

This term for art we have been doing Maori art based on Peter Gossage. I did my picture on the sun in Maui and the sun. This is the original picture.This is my picture.Give me a rating 1-10

James Russell

On Wednesday last week we had a visit from the kiwi author James Russell. He told us the story about how he got a hunting knife for his wedding and ended up severing a nerve in his hand while trying to cut to frozen crumpets. He also read us some of his dragon defenders book.

Chess Power

A while ago we had the chess power tournament  it was like a normal tournament but it was individual scores instead of team scores and you can earn badges I earned the sneaky knight and the triple queens badge and Good shepherd 1 came fourth!

Water Cleaning Experiment.

On Friday the 7th June Good Shepherd had a visit from one of the people from water safety. They taught us about the stages of water purification that happen at the water care station, the first stage is sifting, they get sifts and they sift the dirt, leaves and other big stuff out of the water. Two the get get noodle like things with really really really small holes that suck out the germs called a membrane. Three they put gas chlorine in the water which kills all the smaller germs which can get through membrane And that is how they make river water into drinking water.

R.E comic

A few weeks ago in religious education we made comics showing someone getting tempted and then the Holy Spirit making them do good. Mine was about a turtle called Greg because why not?. In the story Greg gets tempted but is then fired because he and his employer disagreed on what 9+10 is so then the holy spirit comes and Greg is good again!

The Kids Lit Quiz

On Monday the twentieth of May Mia, Liam b, Kayano and me went to the kids lit quiz as Good Shepherd one. The kids lit quiz  is a competition to test 10-13 year old's knowledge on books and book related questions. Good Shepherd one was very good because we came second out of all the primary schools and half way overall. The winners received $1000 dollars to pay for there trip to the N.Z. finals and then the winners of that, will go to the world finals.

Last Friday we had our assembly. We displayed some of our art on dyed paper and hung it on the walls here's a photo. We also had a play called My grandad marches on A.N.Z.A.C day. 

Science in a van

On Friday the whole school had a visit from Science in a van they taught us science. It was fun but the only bad thing was they didn't do the science in van.

Two weeks ago all of room five wrote a brochure about a different item, we could do it alone or in pairs. Matthew and I wrote about an army uniform. Here are a couple of photos of it.

In writing we got box of things from World War One and we had to write about one either a slideshow or a Google Draw poster with a partner or by our selves I did a slideshow  with Matthew b because slides are superior to Google Draw. Here is our slide.

For the last few weeks we have been making posters about animals. My poster was about tigers. I chose tigers because they are interesting to learn about. Here is a photo of my poster.

Postcard

For writing our class entered the Get NZ Writing project. We wrote a poem about either a teddy bear, a dinosaur, a puzzle piece, a rock, a chess piece, a spider, a compass, a  ship in a bottle, a key, a person, a gem or a coin and it had to be an anagram of the the item you chose two words four words five words four words three words and then the item you wrote about. My poem was about the dinosaur it was a sad Poem here it is.

Escape from Kraznir

This term we have been writing an adventure/fantasy story called escape from Kraznir. Escape from Kraznir is about five spy's four predetermined and one who we got to chose. My character is called Johnyboy, the other four are littlejane who is a hobbit and really fast who has a dagger. The second one is a wizard called Touchfire who can throw fire then there's a warrior called sarason and lastly a dwarf who is called Athor. Here is the third chapter from my story.


“aaaaachooe” sneezed touchfire “Is hsass sas sblosceds snose” (i have a blocked nose) said touchfire. 

“Urgh” littlejane said “your disgusting” she then walked away but was not looking where she was going and fell off a ledge and into a prickle patch. “AHHHHHHHH” she screamed as she was falling her hands went into a perfect dab.
“I'd give that a five out of ten” said sarason.
“Shut up” said littlejane “i’m in pain”
“LOL” said sarason

“Stop fighting kids” johnyboy told them
“Anyway there’s a boat up ahead”

“Achoe” touchfire snesed fire and burnt the boat.
“Wow really professional” Athor commented.
“Never mind start fighting again kids” said johnyboy
“I’m Dyiiiing” said littlejane.
“No your not” said touchfire (whose cold went away)
“Yes i am,i cut myself on a prickle and i’ve been killed”.
They look over their shoulders and see littlejane who has managed to decapitate herself on a prickle.

Three and a half hours later …

“Wait” called out johnyboy
“Shhhhh!” said everyone else
“And so the moment of silence is over you can now talk” said Touchfire (who is a priest).
“I know how to get across the water” johnyboy said after the funeral “ I can make the water turn to ice and we can walk and push the supplies over the water”. And so the four heroes walked across the ice towards the desert.

Graphs

Last week we made graphs about surveys with partners. I made a graph with Matthew. It was about what peoples' favourite subjects are. The favourite one was writing followed by reading and then maths. Here is a photo of our bar graph.

Shrove Tuesday

Today is Shrove Tuesday, Shrove Tuesday is about getting ready for Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday is the first of 40 days of Lent. On Shrove Tuesday we saw the priest burn the palms from last years Palm Sunday. we also make and eat pancakes because people used to give up the ingredients that make pancakes for lent so people made pancakes instead of wasting ingredients. mantra

In room five we have been doing mantras a mantra is a statement or slogan repeated a lot. Here is my one i like it because it is inspiring.

swimming sports

On Wednesday the 20 February the year 3 to 6 students from good shepherd school went to west wave swim pool to do our swimming sports. We had two groups the competitive and non competitive I was in non competitive. I was in non competitive. I came fourth in water walking and dolphin dive and then third in free style. This was my most successful swimming sports yet.

My pepeha

This term we are doing our pepeha. A pepeha is is a way of introducing yourself in Māori. It tells a story of the places and people you are connected to. This is my pepeha.

year 6 camp

On Monday the 28 of January the year 6's from good shepherd went to M.E.R.C. Which abbreviates for marine education and reserve center for one whole week. Some activities we did were abseiling, climbing, paddle boarding, stack em, archery and sailing. it was so fun I wish we could go back there again.

This week we were so busy! Some stuff we have done this week is....

On Tuesday we celebrated lunar new year. Its now the year of the pig.

We also made dragon masks. Wednesday was Waitangi Day day so we got the day off school. And on Friday we had the leadership assembly. I got the head librarian role.
